We're the world's leading wedding planner certification program and largest membership of wedding professionals. We're dedicated to elevating the wedding planning industry. I'm Lori Hartwell, founder and CEO of the CWP Society, also known as the Certified Wedding Planner Society, and today I want to tackle a crucial topic that affects the future of our profession.

Recently, I've noticed a concerning trend on social media and in some industry circles. There are some established professionals that are advising newcomers to skip formal education and certification, suggesting that they should just jump in and learn as they go. While experience is invaluable, this advice potentially undermines both our profession and our client's best interest. Let me share a story that illustrates why this matters. Last month, I spoke with a woman named Jessica, a talented new planner who followed this jump ride in advice. Six months into her career, she found herself managing a $100,000 wedding with no support system, no vendor network and no crisis management training. And when one of the vendors had a medical emergency a couple of days before the wedding, jessica felt completely overwhelmed. She had no backup plan, no established relationships with other wedding pros and, most importantly, she didn't have a mentor or professional community that she could turn to for help. Now, this situation could have been avoided if Jessica had started with proper education and certification. So here's why every wedding planner should start with education. First, wedding planning isn't just about choosing colors and decorations. It's about contract law, business insurance, vendor negotiations, crisis management and so much more. These are skills that need to be learned properly and from the start. Now, second, certification programs provide more than just knowledge. They offer a professional network and a support system. When you're certified through a reputable organization, for example the CWP Society, you have access to mentors, peer support and continuing education resources, and in our case, you also have access to award-winning, master certified wedding planners that guide you through your journey every step of the way. This network becomes invaluable when you face inevitable challenges.

Now let's consider this from the client's perspective. Think about other professional services. Would you hire an uncertified person to do your taxes? An unlicensed electrician to rewire your entire house? Would you hire someone without a law degree to handle your case? Would you get into a plane with a pilot that doesn't have proper training and licensing to fly? What about an architect without credentials to design your home, of course, you wouldn't hire someone like that. So why would we expect couples today to trust their once in a lifetime high dollar celebration to someone without proper training?

Recent surveys actually show that 78% of couples prefer to work with certified wedding planners over those without their educational credentials. They understand that certification represents a commitment to professionalism and expertise. When they're investing tens of thousands of dollars in their wedding, they want assurance that their planner actually knows what they're doing. So to my fellow planners who already have started this career, I understand the instinct to encourage enthusiasm and of hands-on learning, but we have a responsibility to our profession and to future planners. So instead of saying, just jump in, get experience, let's say start with education and then gain your experience.

And to those considering entering the wedding planning industry your passion and creativity are essential, but they need to be backed by solid education and credentials. So start with a comprehensive certification program, build your foundation of knowledge, create your support network. Build your foundation of knowledge, create your support network and then, when you step into your first wedding, you'll do so with confidence. And confidence and knowledge here's what a proper educational foundation should actually include. You're going to need those business fundamentals and those legal requirements, contract information and knowing how to negotiate. You need to know how to build vendor relationships and then know how to manage them. You need crisis planning and risk management tools. You need to have an understanding of event logistics and principles. You need to have an understanding about budget management and pricing strategies, as well as marketing and client communication.

Remember this education isn't just about classroom learning. Quality certification programs include mentorship opportunities, continuing educational workshops and industry connections, and this combination actually creates well-rounded professionals who are truly prepared to succeed. The wedding planning industry is definitely evolving and as more couples invest in professional planning services, we need to ensure that our industry maintains high standards. By emphasizing the importance of education and certification, we're not just protecting our profession. We're ensuring that every couple gets the exceptional service that they deserve. So let's work together to raise the bar. Let's create a future where every wedding planner starts their journey with the tools, knowledge and support that they need to succeed.
